In its season opener, the Maryville softball team jumped out to an early lead but saw Georgia College rally for a 7-3 victory to begin the Charger Chillout Friday in Decatur, Ala.
In the top of the third inning, the Saints used four hits to push across three runs. With one out, Shelby Steinkamp singled and stole second after a strikeout. Kelsey Kapitzke singled to left and pushed Steinkamp to third. Sarah Graham lashed another singe to drive in the first run of the season for the Saints. The two runners then moved up a base on a wild pitch. Karlie Twisselman delivered a two-run single down the right field line as Maryville took a 3-0 lead.
The Saints kept Georgia College off the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth. GC pieced together three hits, one walk and a hit batter and took advantage of a Maryville error to score five runs.
The Saints put runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh inning but stranded three and were unable to close the gap. Both teams finished with six hits in the game. Georgia College improved to 6-7 on the season. The Saints continue action in the Charger Chillout Saturday with two games.
