The Maryville softball team split a pair of games in day two of action at the Charger Chillout in Decatur, Ala. Saturday afternoon. The Saints defeated Truman State 8-6 for their first win then fell 12-4 to Florida Tech.
Against in-state foe Truman State, the Saints rallied from an early two-run deficit and held on late for the victory. After TSU scored two runs in the top of the second, the Saints earned one back in the bottom. Kelsey Barbeau singled with two outs Danni Wydra hit a long single to center and the ball caromed away for an error allowing Barbeau to sprint home.
The Saints took charge with their biggest inning of the tournament with four runs in the third. Shelby Steinkamp led off with a single, and Meredith Brown put down a sac bunt. Sarah Graham singled to left and took second as TSU tried unsuccessfully to throw Steinkamp out at third. Kelsey Kapitzke reached on an RBI fielder’s choice as Steinkamp scored the tying run. After Barbeau walked to load the bases, Wydra was hit by a pitch to drive in another run. Molli Updegraff singled up the middle as the Saints eventually took a 5-2 lead.
Truman State tacked on a run in the top of the sixth, but the Saints answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Updegraff and Steinkamp singled to start the outburst. A TSU error pushed the runners home, and Brown lashed an RBI single and scored after another error for an 8-3 lead. Kapitzke started in the circle for the Saints and scattered 10 hits and eventually picked up the win. Truman State scored three runs in the top of the seventh, but Julie Jouglard induced a double play and retired the final batter on a grounder.
In game two versus Florida Tech, the Panthers jumped out to a big lead and kept a Saints rally in check. Trailing 11-0, Maryville strung together five hits and scored three runs. Kapitzke doubled and Haley Bartow launched a single to right. Jennifer Maynez doubled through the left side to score two runs. Tara Macias followed with an RBI single to center as the Saints tallied their third run of the contest. In the top of the fifth, the Saints added another run when Celci Mueller doubled and Alex Carr had an RBI groundout. Maryville was unable to push across any more runs.
The Saints are 1-3 and take on Delta State and Augusta State Sunday to close out the Charger Chillout.
