Saints Fall in Softball Doubleheader at Saint Joseph’s

The Maryville softball team closed out its four-game swing in Indiana by falling at Saint Joseph’s in both ends of a doubleheader Sunday. The Pumas took game one by a 7-1 score, and they claimed the finale 6-3.
 
In the first contest, SJU tallied two runs in the bottom of the first. The Pumas had three straight singles to open the inning before the Saints turned a double play. However, Maryville was unable to avoid further damage as the SJU eventually struck for a single that plated two runs. The Saints struck back in the top of the second. Karlie Twisselman singled, and Kelsey Barbeau doubled her in to cut the Pumas’ lead to 2-1. Saint Joseph’s earned that run back with a run in the third before sealing the win with a four-run fourth.
 
In game two, the Saints took the early lead when the manufactured a run. Shelby Steinkamp doubled with one out and stole third. Sarah Graham put down a sac bunt to drive in the first tally of the game. The Pumas retook the lead with six runs in the bottom of the first. Maryville scored one run in the third to cut into its deficit. Meredith Brown reached on an error, and moved into scoring position on a Steinkamp sacrifice. Barbeau then drove in her second run of the day with a single. The Saints attempted a late rally as Alex Carr drew a walk and Molli Updegraff was hit by a pitch. Brown drilled a single to bring Maryville to 6-3. However, the Saints were unable to push across any more runs as Saint Joseph’s held on for the win.
