The Maryville baseball team traveled to Evansville, Ind., Saturday and earned a split against No. 15 Southern Indiana. The Saints pounded out a 12-4 victory in game one, but the Screaming Eagles had to rally to take game two 10-9.

The Saints roared out to an early lead and would not let up in the romp. Maryville took the lead in the top of the first when Kyle Kinyon singled to drive in Nick Little and Bryce Bastien. USI answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, but the Saints responded with three more runs in the second. Jared Green reached on a fielder’s choice to score Andrew Naegeli, who started the inning with a single. Corey Gall launched a deep double to score Green and Colby White.

Southern Indiana tallied a single score in the bottom of the third, but the Saints sealed the victory with four runs in the fourth inning. Kinyon came through again with another two-RBI hit. Aaron Asher drilled a single up the middle to score a run, and Mike Wilkinson’s RBI stretched the Saints’ lead to 9-2.

Kinyon keyed the attack with a 3-for-5 game, drove in four runs and scored three runs. The Saints finished with 20 hits as nine different players registered at least one hit.

In the second contest, the Screaming Eagles scored one run in the bottom of the first, but the Saints replied with five straight tallies. Mike Wilkinson tripled and scored Aaron Asher to tie the score. Maryville took advantage of two errors by USI and jumped to a 5-1 lead by scoring four unearned runs. Southern Indiana inched to within 5-4 in the fourth, but again, the Saints had a reply. In the top of the fifth, Maryville drew two bases-loaded walks and scored another on a USI error. Southern Indiana then took the lead with five runs in the home half of the inning and built a 10-8 lead going into the top of the seventh.

Mike Wilkinson walked and took second on a passed ball. Nick Little singled to put runners on first and third. Bryce Bastien singled to right to pull the Saints to 10-9 as Little sprinted all the way to third. However, he was stranded there as USI held on for the win.

The Saints are now 5-6 overall, 1-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Southern Indiana stands at 10-5, 1-1 in the league.
