In its home Great Lakes Valley Conference opening games, the Maryville baseball squad split a doubleheader against visiting Bellarmine. The Saints took the first contest 6-3 before the Knights rallied for a 6-2 win in the second game.
The Saints erupted for four runs in the bottom of the second for all the offense they would need. Mike Wilkinson dropped in a single to center, and Andrew Naegeli hit a sharp ball through the left to put two runners on the base paths. Cory Gall laid down a sac bunt before Aaron Asher drove in the first run of the game with a single to right. Colby White, who finished with three hits in the game, then drilled a ball to left center and sprinted to third for a triple and a 3-0 lead. Nick Little capped the outburst with a long single that landed just inside the foul line as the Saints charged ahead 4-0.
Maryville added to its lead when Gall smashed a double to left to play Naegeli with the fifth run of the game. Bellarmine finally got on the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the sixth, but the Saints gave themselves breathing room with a tally in the seventh. Jared Green singled to lead off, and after a Kyle Kinyon sacrifice, Wilkinson singled to right to put runners on the corners. Naegeli notched a single to push the Saints lead to 6-3. Matt Staback came on in relief of starter Eric Keling and threw three innings of one-hit ball. Keling picked up his second win of the season and only gave up one earned run in six frames of work.
In game two, the Saints again took the early lead with two runs in the second. Daniel Barnett singled in Asher with the first run of the game, and Bryce Bastien had his second straight hit to score White for a 2-0 Maryville lead. The Knights tied the game in the top of the third, but the Saints nearly answered right back. Maryville used two walks and a single to load the bases but stranded all the runners. Bellarmine took advantage of two Maryville errors to push across the eventual game winner, and the Knights sealed the win with three runs in the top of the seventh, including a solo homer by Phillip Leopold.
The Saints now stand at 7-8 overall, 3-3 in the GLVC. The Knights move to 10-7 overall, 3-1 in the GLVC. Maryville welcomes Northern Kentucky to Weber Field for a doubleheader Sunday starting at noon.
