The Maryville softball team launched three homers while splitting a doubleheader against Illinois Springfield Saturday afternoon. The Prairie Stars took game one 6-3, while the Saints won game two 5-2.

In the first game, UIS used a five-run third inning to take control. The Prairie Stars scored on in the top of the first before the Saints tied it. Karlie Tsisselman singled, stole second and scored on Kelsey Kapitzke’s RBI single. However, UIS pushed across five runs on five hits and two MU errors. The Saints inched back into the game with a single tally in the sixth on a Kapitzke RBI grounder. Jennifer Maynez smashed a solo home run in the seventh to cut the gap to three, but that would be as close as the Saints would get.

Game two saw Maryville launch two homers to key the decisive five-run outburst in the bottom of the third. Karlie Twisselman hit a homer to put the Saints on top 1-0. Shelby Steinkamp singled and later scored on Sarah Graham’s base hit for a 2-0 margin. After Kapitzke drew a walk, Maynez drilled her second homer of the day as the Saints extended their lead to five. The Prairie Stars added single tallies in the fifth and seventh, but Maryville starter Brittany Mayfield kept UIS at bay to pick up the complete game victory.

The Saints improve to 6-20 overall, 3-11 in the GLVC. Illinois Springfield is now 12-10, 7-5 in the conference.
