William Jewell took early leads in both games as they slid past Maryville in a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball games at Weber Field in St. Louis. The Cardinals took game one 10-1 and the second tilt 8-2.

William Jewell pushed across three runs in the first inning before the Saints kept the Cardinals at bay. The Cardinals added a run in the fourth before building their lead further with four more scores in the sixth. The Saints broke through with a run in the bottom of the sixth when Bryce Bastein walked and came all the way around to score on a WJC error. Nick Little reached second base but was stranded there in scoring position. Mike Wilkinson, who had three hits in the first game, reached on a sharply hit single to lead off the seventh but the Saints were unable to move him around. Maryville had a base hit in the last two innings but were unable to muster any additional offense.

After William Jewell scored two runs in the second inning of game two, Wilkinson had his fourth straight hit to start the bottom of the second. He took second on Bastein’s sac bunt and moved to third on a grounder but the Saints stranded Wilkinson at third base. The Cardinals built onto their lead with three runs in the third before Maryville responded with two scores in the fourth. Kyle Kinyon singled to start the comeback, and Bastien doubled. Corey Gall singled in a run, and Aaron Asher had an RBI grounder as the Saints cut the deficit to 5-2. Maryville recorded one hit in each of its next three at bats but William Jewell kept the Saints off the scoreboard and sealed the win with three runs in the sixth.

The Saints are now 7-13 overall, 3-7 in the GLVC, and the Cardinals are 10-12, 3-7 in conference. The teams will play another doubleheader Sunday at Noon.
