The Maryville baseball team scored the final eight runs of the game in attempting a furious comeback but came up just short in a 13-12 home loss to William Woods. The teams combined to record 35 hits in the contest.

The Owls scored one run in the top of the first before the Saints surged ahead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Andrew Naegeli singled, and Bryce Bastien doubled to put two Maryville runners in scoring position. Jared Green’s single gave the Saints a 2-1 lead. After neither team scored in the second, William Woods pushed across five runs in the third. The Saints answered with a single runs in the third and fourth frames. Green lofted a sac fly to plate a run in the third, and Naegeli drove in a run with an RBI single to draw the Saints to 6-4.

However, the Owls erupted for seven runs in the fifth to surge ahead 13-4, setting the stage for the Saints to attempt a daunting comeback. Colby White tripled in two runs, and Zach Bradford’s RBI single drew Maryville to 13-7. In the sixth inning, Kyle Kinyon singled in a run, and Mike Wilkinson followed with yet another RBI base hit. White then singled in two more runs as the Saints put more pressure on the Owls by cutting their lead to 13-11. After keeping William Woods off the board in the top of the seventh, the Saints scored their eighth straight run when Green’s sacrifice forced in another run as Maryville closed to 13-12.

After holding the Owls scoreless for the fourth straight inning, the Saints nearly capped off their stirring rally by loading the bases. Nick Little walked, and Bastien singled. Maryville got a reprieve when the Owls committed an error to load the bases with two outs. However, the Saints comeback ended with a grounder to second base as the Owls (26-14) held on for the victory.

Green and White both drove in four runs apiece to pace the Saints (9-20) offensive barrage. Naegeli registered four hits, while Bastien, White and Wilkinson all notched three hits. Every spot in Maryville’s lineup recorded at least one hit and six different Saints drove in at least one run.

Maryville returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference action this Saturday as it hosts Illinois Springfield to start a four-game series.
