Despite repeated comeback attempts by the Maryville softball team looking to extend a two-game winning streak, Rockhurst held on to take both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Sunday. The Hawks won game one 4-2 and the second contest 8-5 to spoil Senior Day for Saints seniors Sarah Graham and Molli Updegraff.

The Hawks started quickly with three runs in the top of the first. The Saints nearly got one run back in the second when Karlie Twisselman tripled to left center, but she was eventually stranded there. Rockhurst added a single tally in the fifth before the Saints rallied in the bottom of the sixth. Shelby Steinkamp beat out a bunt single, and Graham singled and moved into scoring position when the Hawks unsuccessfully tried to throw out Steinkamp at third. Kelsey Kaptizke squeezed in a run on a bunt to get the Saints on the scoreboard. Jennifer Maynez hit a hard RBI single to right to plate Graham as Maryville closed to 4-2. However, the Saints were unable to complete the comeback as Rockhurst held on for the win.

Game two went back and forth before the Hawks sealed the win in their last at bat. Rockhurst again took the early lead with two runs in the top of the first. The Saints responded with one run in the second as they took advantage of two Hawks’ errors to score an unearned run. The Hawks built a 4-1 lead in the third before Maryville answered with two runs of its own. Kapitzke singled to left, and Maynez worked a walk. Meredith Brown doubled to right to bring both runners in as the Saints closed to 4-3. Danni Wydra launched a towering home run in the fourth to forge a 4-4 tie as Maryville came all the way back.

The Hawks regained the lead with two scores in the fifth on a Natalie Johnson two-run homer before the Saints drew one back in the sixth. Updegraff singled, and Steinkamp was hit by a pitch. Graham came through with an RBI single but the rally did not continue any further. Rockhurst had bloop single fall in right as the Hawks sealed the win with two runs in the top of the seventh.

The Saints, who had swept a doubleheader versus Central Missouri in their last outing, fell to 11-33 overall, 4-24 in the GLVC. The Hawks improve to 17-27, 12-16 in the conference.
