The Maryville baseball squad made the short trek across town to take on the University of Missouri-St. Louis in a doubleheader, but the Saints were held in check as the Tritons received two complete games from their starting pitchers. The Saints fell 10-4 in game one and dropped an 8-0 decision in the finale.

The Saints put the first two batters of the game on board when Nick Little was hit by a pitch and Andrew Naegeli singled to left.  However, Maryville ended up leaving two runners on the base paths. The Tritons scored three runs in the bottom of the first to charge ahead. The Saints got on the scoreboard in the top of the third as they manufactured a run. Aaron Asher reached on an error and took second on a wild pitch. Little put down a sac but, and Naegeli launched a sacrifice fly to center as the Saints closed to 3-1.

UMSL tacked on two runs in the bottom of the third, before the Saints finally struck for a score in the seventh. Mike Wilkinson walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Bryce Bastien singled to put runners on the corners. The Saints hit into a double play, but Wilkinson’s run cut their deficit to 5-2. However, UMSL tacked on five runs in the bottom of the seventh to take control. The Saints attempted a late rally as Corey Gall smashed a two-run double to center to score Zach Bradford and Kyle Kinyon, but the Maryville rally stalled out there.

In the second game, both teams finished with eight hits, but the Tritons took advantage of timely hitting to complete the sweep. After scoring one run in the bottom of the first, UMSL extended its lead with five runs in the third.  The Saints had their best scoring opportunities in the fourth and fifth innings. Maryville left two runners aboard in the fourth and the bases loaded in the fifth. Colby White, Little and Naegeli all reached base but the Saints could not get the needed two-out hit to close the gap.

The Saints dip to 8-16 overall, 4-10 in the GLVC. The Tritons up their slate to 11-15 overall, 4-10 in conference. Maryville begins a four-game series at Rockhurst starting Friday and continuing Saturday.
