After both teams had early scoring chances, a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest slipped away from the Maryville baseball squad as Drury scored late to post a 10-0 victory Friday afternoon. Due to scheduling, the game was contested in Rolla, Mo., at Missouri S&T’s baseball field.
The Saints registered at least one hit in the first three innings but were unable to take the lead. Maryville’s best scoring chance occurred in the bottom of the second. Corey Gall singled, took second on a grounder and moved to third after Mike Wilkinson’s single to left. Saints starter Matt Staback kept the Panthers off the scoreboard until Drury finally broke through with two runs in the fourth and sealed the win with five runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Saints pushed a runner into scoring position twice but were unable to deliver an RBI.
The Saints are 14-31 overall, 10-22 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Drury improves to 28-17, 20-12 in the league. Maryville looks to turn its fortune around as they come back to Missouri S&T to take on the host Miners, who are ranked No. 19 in this week’s Top 25 poll.
