The No. 4-seeded Maryville men’s basketball team dropped a 53-48 decision to No. 5 seed Bellarmine in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Deaconess GLVC Tournament Thursday at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind. The Saints fell short in their bid to down the Knights for the second time this season after beating Bellarmine earlier at home.

The Saints trailed by seven points early in the second half before forging a tie at 29-29. Jamel Johnson scored inside on a layup, and Armon Provo sank a long jumper to pull the Saints to 27-24. After a Knights score, Asa Toney answered as he drained a 3-pointer. Johnson converted a layup at the 14:59 mark to tie the game. The No. 15 ranked Knights reeled off nine straight points to surge back ahead 38-29. Provo started warming up from beyond the arc as he hit three consecutive triples to bring the Saints back to 40-38 with just less than nine minutes left to play.

Bellarmine stretched its advantage back up to 46-38 until the Saints mounted yet another comeback. Maryville hit six free throws while keeping the Knights off the scoreboard to edge within 46-44 at the 2:29 mark. The Knights took over at the free-throw line and sank four in a row. Trae Pemberton was fouled and hit both of his charity tosses to bring the Saints to 50-46, and after Bellarmine missed a dunk, Shaw scored on a drive to the hoop to trim the gap to 50-48 with 30.5 seconds remaining. The Knights made two free throws for a four-point edge. However, the Saints misfired on a 3-pointer, and Bellarmine hit one more free throw in the waning seconds to seal the victory.

Provo paced the Saints with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Toney added 11 points and tied for the team led with six rebounds. Senior Gerald Shaw closed out his Maryville career with nine points and five rebounds. Chris Dowe topped Bellarmine with 17 points.

The Saints close out the season with a school record for wins at 23-9. The Knights improve to 22-6 on the year and advance to the semifinals.
