Samantha Robison hit two free throws with 12.9 seconds left in the game, and Maryville survived two frantic shots from William Jewell to escape with a 62-61 victory in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Deaconess Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Friday afternoon at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind. The Saints, who are the No. 2 seed, advance to the semifinals and face No. 3 seed Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday, March 9, at 6 p.m.
The Saints trailed 46-38 but charged ahead with 11 straight points. Robison hit a layup to start the run, and
Shelby Miller drilled a 3-pointer.
Kayla Person scored on a steal and drive, and
Angela Pepowski hit two free throws to put the Saints ahead 47-46. Person sank a wing jumper for a 49-46 lead with 8:15 left to play. William Jewell hit one free throw to end the MU run, but Robison knocked down a 3-pointer for a 52-47 lead.
The Cardinals converted two free throws, but Miller answered with a triple and a three-points play for a 58-49 edge with 5:20 remaining.
Kate Childs sank two from the free-throw stripe and a seemingly comfortable 60-51 margin with 5:03 to play. The Cardinals turned up the defensive pressure and tallied the next 10 points to surge back ahead on a Katlyn Wood layup with 20 seconds to play to set up the frantic finish.
The Saints missed two shots but Robison grabbed an offensive rebound and was sent to the line for two. She swished the first, and after a WJC timeout, calmly knocked down the second to put the Saints up 62-61. The Maryville defense forced a deep 3-pointer by William Jewell, but the Cardinals grabbed the miss and put up another shot that fell short as the Saints defeated WJC for the first time this season.
Robison and Miller led Maryville with 12 points apiece as Maryville put five players in double-figures. Katlyn Wood and Cassy Nicolay both recorded double-doubles to lead the Cardinals. The Saints improve to 18-9, while William Jewell ends its season at 18-10.
