Maryville University wrestler
Matt Baker (Prairie Village, Kan.) has been voted to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-American Division II first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Baker was selected to the Men’s At-Large team which includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. He becomes Maryville’s 12th Academic All-American and the third Saint student-athlete to earn first-team honors.
In March, Baker won Maryville’s first ever National Championship in Division II. Wrestling at 197 pounds, he posted a sterling 40-1 record and was the No. 1 ranked wrestler in his weight class. Baker is a two-time All-American and a four-time Academic All-American as chosen by the Wrestling Coaches Association. He helped the Saints climb as high as No. 15 in the national polls. Baker was named the 2013 Maryville University Male Student-Athlete of the Year. In addition, he won the 2012 Great Lakes Valley Conference Sportsmanship award.
Baker, who will graduate from the University with a degree in biology education, is one of three student-athletes representing schools from the GLVC. To become eligible for the Academic All-American team, Baker was previously voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 At-Large first team. Student-athletes must be at least sophomores in academic standing and have compiled at least at 3.30 cumulative GPA.
