Jordynn Martin tallied a career-high 19 points as the No. 8-seeded Maryville women's team advanced to the finals of the 2014 Deaconess Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament with an 80-70 victory over No. 4 Indianapolis Saturday afternoon at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind. The Saints have reached the GLVC title game in each of their three years as a member of the league. The championship game is Sunday at 1 p.m. against either No. 3 Quincy or No. 7 Truman State.
Indianapolis took a 9-3 lead but the Saints answered with 13 straight points to surge ahead. Martin hit a wing jumper and her free throw began the run. Rita Flynn followed with a bucket, and Brittany Fish swished a 3-pointer to give Maryville a lead it would not surrender. Erica Lorton grabbed an offensive rebound and put the ball back in. Fish finished the run with a trey for a 16-9 lead six minutes into the contest. The Greyhounds kept the game close and cut the deficit to 26-25 with six minutes to play but the Saints answered with a 10-1 run. Alex Hillyer hit a midrange jumper and later made two free throws. After a UIndy free throw, Martin drilled a 3-pointer, and Hillyer did the same from behind the arc for a 36-26 lead. Maryville took a 41-31 cushion into halftime.
The Saints were still up 57-44 before taking its biggest lead of the night. Samantha Robison hit back-to-back jumpers to start the run. After two Greyhound free throws, Joann Thompson and Martin splashed in consecutive 3-pointers for a 67-46 lead with 8:25 to play. Indianapolis cut into the lead and got as close as 14 but the Saints hit their free throws in the final five minutes to hold on for their second straight upset in the tournament.
Martin hit 7-of-11 shots from the field en route to her career best. Fish sank five 3-pointers and finished wtih 15 points, while Miller added 13 points. Lorton battled inside for 11 points and just missed a double-double wtih nine rebounds. Rose Savela led Indianapolis (23-8) with a career-high 16 points.
The Saints are now 20-11 and upped their mark to 9-1 all-time in the GLVC Tournament.
