St. Louis – The University of Southern Indiana scored a goal early in the second overtime to upset the Maryville University men's soccer team 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Soccer Championships Sunday afternoon.
What Happened – Maryville, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, opened the scoring in the 33rd minute as
JD Sohn slotted a shot into the lower left corner of the goal that gave the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Vittorio Sasso earned the assist on the goal by Sohn. Southern Indiana, the seventh seed in the post-season, evened the contest at 1-1 in the 58th minute as the game moved into overtime. The Screaming Eagles ended the contest with a goal in the 102nd minute to advance to the semifinals.
Inside the Numbers – Maryville outshot the Screaming Eagles 16-5 on the afternoon. The goal for Sohn was his seventh of the season. Southern Indiana's goal in the second half was the first score given up by the Saints since Missouri S&T scored in the first half of the match back on Oct.13, 2017.
How They Stand – Maryville sees its record fall to 12-3-2. The Screaming Eagles improve to 11-6 on the year.
