Indianapolis – McKendree University scored a late goal to break a scoreless tie to defeat the Maryville University women's soccer team 1-0 in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Soccer Championships Friday afternoon at Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis.
What Happened – After the two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half, the second -seeded Bearcats broke through in the 83
rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. The third-seeded Saints had many scoring opportunities during the match, but could not find the back of the net.
Inside the Numbers – Caite Huesgen led the Saints offence with three shots while
Allison Verville and
Alex Johnson each added a pair of shots. The Bearcats outshot Maryville 13-9 on the day.
How They Stand – Maryville ends the season with an overall record of 9-6-3. The Bearcats improve to 14-2-3 on the year and will play No 1 Quincy Sunday afternoon. The nine wins are the most for the Maryville program since 2008.
