Alex Wolf's layup at the buzzer propelled the Maryville women's basketball team to an 80-78 upset victory over the sixth-seeded Truman State Bulldogs Sunday at Pershing Arena in Kirksville, Mo., in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Basketball Tournament. The Saints, seeded 11th in the tournament, advanced to the quarterfinals that will held in Evansville, Ind., and will face top-seed Drury in the Ford Center. Game time will be announced later.

The Saints raced out to an early 5-2 lead as Wolf scored on a lay-up and
Ali Ringering drilled a triple from the left wing to give Maryville the advantage.
Mary Barton and
Stephanie Sherwood each scored to extend the Saints lead to 9-3. The Bulldogs battled back and drew even with Maryville at 14-14 before
Kayla Steward drained a three from the right wing to put the Saints ahead 17-14 with 2:34 left in the period. After Truman scored the next four points, Barton nailed a three from the top of the key at the buzzer to give Maryville a 20-18 lead. Barton's buzzer beater ignited an 11-2 run that extended the Saints advantage to 28-20 with 5:30 remaining in the half. Truman put together an 11-6 run over the last five minute of the half to cut the Saints lead to 34-31 at the half.

The hot shooting continued for both teams in the second half as Sherwood opened up the third with a jumper to extend the lead 36-31. The Bulldogs kept things close over the first five minutes of the period, but Ringering knocked down another three to give Maryville its largest lead of the second half at 44-36 with 5:51 remaining. The Bulldogs did not go quietly as they put together a 9-4 run over the next 2:46 to take only their second lead of the game at 47-46. The lead went back and forth until the Bulldogs' Rachel Edmundson hit a baseline jumper with two seconds remaining to give Truman a 54-52 advantage after three periods.

The fourth quarter saw both team trade the lead as there were 17 lead changes in the game with a total of 11 ties.The largest lead by either team in the quarter was four points when the Bulldogs drained a three to take a 69-65 lead with 3:03 remaining. Sherwood answered the Truman triple with one of her own as the Saints quickly cut the deficit to a single point at 69-68 with just under three minutes left to play. Truman scored a bucket before Steward banked a 3-pointer in from the right wing to tie the game up at 71-71 with two minutes remaining. Each team hit a pair of free throws but Ringering converted a three-point play to give the Saints a 76-73 edge with 51 seconds left. After each squad again drained a pair of free throws, Brooke Bailey tied the contest up with a triple from the top of the key with 32 seconds left. The Saints called a pair of timeouts to set up the final play which saw Sherwood take a jumper from 15 feet out that fell of the hoop into the hands of Wolf, who put it back up and in as time expired to give the Saints the upset victory.

Ringering led four Saints in double figures with 24 points while Barton added 17 markers and four assists. Sherwood finished with 15 points and was 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, and Steward added 13 points. Wolf finished the afternoon with nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Saints (13-13) advance to play the top-seeded team in the tournament, Drury, in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at the Ford Center.
