Allison Verville scored the only goal that the Maryville University women's soccer team needed as the third-seeded Saints defeated No. 6 Truman State 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Soccer Championships Sunday afternoon.
What Happened – After a scoreless first 33 minutes of action, Verville converted on a penalty kick after a foul in the 18-yard box to give the Saints a 1-0 advantage. The Saints outshot Truman State 5-1 in the first half. The Bulldogs controlled the tempo in the beginning of the second stanza but Saints defense was outstanding in earning the shutout.
Inside the Numbers – Maryville outshot Truman State 11-7 on the afternoon with
Alison Riddle only having to make one save in the match.
Alex Johnson paced the Saints with three shots on the afternoon. This will be the first trip to the GLVC Final Four for the Saints since becoming a member of the league in 2011.
How They Stand – Maryville improves to 9-4-3 overall. The Bulldogs finish the season with a 6-6-5 mark.
Up Next – Maryville advances to the GLVC semifinals on Friday, Nov. 3, and will take on second-seeded McKendree at Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis. The match is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. Central Time.
