Ozark, Mo. – The Maryville baseball team cranked out six extra-base hits and received another outstanding pitching performance from
Andrew Peters to upset Bellarmine 5-2 in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Tournament Thursday afternoon at U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark, Mo.
The Saints opened the scoring in the top of the second inning as
Garrett Taylor drilled a double down the left field line to score
Dalton Schumer from first base and gave Maryville a 1-0 advantage.
Brennan Williams and
Louis Niemerg extended the lead in the top of the third with back-to-back RBI doubles to give the Saints a 3-0 lead, then Schumer added to the Maryville lead in the fifth with another RBI double to left center field to give the Saints a 4-0 advantage. The Knights cut into the Maryville lead with a home run in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 4-1. The homer was the only hit that Peters gave up in 6.1 innings worked. The Saints scored an insurance run in the ninth on a Niemerg sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-1. Bellarmine opened the home half of the inning with another home run, but Maryville closer
Zach Morrisey slammed the door shut as he earned his fifth save of the year.
